Ranging from incredible vistas, high alpine lakes surrounding Lake Tahoe, meadows and valleys, and of course unmatched views of Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Rim Trail makes for a recreational feat unlike any other. Overall i would consider this almost to be more moderate than hard- besides the distance, which is quite manageable, the loop itself is not a huge challenge, but a great time offering amazing views. • The Tahoe Rim Trail is exquisitely maintained, extremely well-signed, and deservedly popular—it’s a truly beautiful hike with spectacular views, accessible to all types of hiking and riding. curtin103 You guys should chat sometime. 7.9 km 1h 37m, 7.6mi The TRT is the more strenuous part of the hike, but beautiful among the trees, and once you hit the tundra, the views of the Lake are spectacular.
Being with company, we went with a modest pace, keeping a 22ish minute mile pace. Trail shared with masses of bikes. I have completed my unsupported lap around the TRT and will submit my official time and report ASAP!
Great hike, requiring a real good hot shower on making it home. Unfortunately, the trail work was postponed after the Donnell Fire closed the PCT section where we would have been working. My plan was to squeeze a solo hike into 11 days in August between PCTA trail crew work and Labor Day weekend with friends at a USFS lookout tower. The Tahoe Rim Trail circles Lake Tahoe for 171 miles, passing through two states, three wilderness areas, and overlapping with 50 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. Having moved to the area recently i have checked out a few other trails (Tallac and Armstrong have been the favorites so far) however, i pass the Spooner Trailhead nearly daily on my way to work, and kept getting more interested each time.

This hike has been on my radar for years because it’s one of those great West Coast hikes that creates a loop (like the Wonderland Trail, the Timberline Trail, or the North Circle Loop). This trail also overlaps with a 50-mile section with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and traverses the Desolation Wilderness. You can start at any place of the trail, take in scenic views as you circle Lake Tahoe, and return right back to where you started. The TRT section had lots of trail runners however. An interesting feature of the trail is that, since it is a loop, one can choose basically any starting/finishing point, and can run in either direction (clockwise or counter-clockwise).
Was a good day, a little windy and warm. Very ambitious loop for those who prefer something other than the Marlette Lake out & back. Something else? I met Tom during a long run while he was pre-running sections of the TRT in June of 2012, along with his good friend (and one of his pacers for the thru-run) Jared Gagnon. This loop can be done in either direction starting from the. I am starting in Tahoe City and going clockwise. Respect! Once reaching the switchbacks, it is a quick sandy decent, which i know will be a blast to send. While I didn't succeed in breaking his record, I did end up finishing with the second-fastest known time ever!

I didn't realize what a "big deal" it was until around a week later when four runners (Adam Hewey, Victor Ballesteros, Gary Gellin, and Ben Lewis) set out to run what they were calling the #TRT165 (even though it was over 169)- there were podcasts, news stories, LIVE TRACKING, etc, and as it turned out, 3 of 4 dropped and the one person that finished was Victor, in 53:03. Following my last attempt were I got sick, I will give another try this friday july 13th starting around 4am PST time.
