It was my go to film for a very long time and is only slightly more expensive than Superia and way cheaper than Portra. Lomo does rebrand and repackage film, and I believe Lomo 400 is actually Kodak Kodacolor VR 400 Plus (what a name), but was originally a Ferrania emulsion. Wow! This film stock is one of the most affordable 35mm film stocks on the market, going for $3-$5 usually, which means it is a great film to start out with when you’re learning and also great for when you have a shoot where you’re going to need a lot of photos, but may not have a huge budget.
This film stock includes the new Super Uniform Fine Grain Technology to achieve high image quality when printing on Fujicolor photo papers. It does work pretty well flipped over though and used as DIY redscale! The trade-off for this being a minor drop in overall sharpness. Designed as an easy-to-use film stock for all photographers shooting in daylight or indoors with flash, this film stock is the perfect way to break into film photography to learn more about daylight film while not breaking the bank! But don’t let its average appearance fool you; Superia is a fantastic film that pushes the boundaries of what a consumer-grade emulsion can do. I’m a big fan of Fujifilm and recently loaded a roll of Superia 400 in a “vintage” Yashica L AF that I was testing. Today I’ll be going over some of the benefits and features of C200, so without any further ado, let’s get into the Fujifilm Fujicolor C200 film stock review. I haven’t tried Portra in either 160 or 400 versions.

The jolt of panic was enough to spring me upright in my bed.
Great article! And Superia 100 is absolutely glorious film, and in my experience a different class to Superia 400… Some of this was in part due to the excellent optics in the humble Yashica – (32mm f3.5 lens) that’s pretty darn close to the Zeiss T3 lens (for hundreds less too). The only caveat with Superia 400’s color rendition in daylight is that it might have a tendency to render lighter skins with a pinkish tone that may be unflattering for portraiture. I came into film photography thinking that I’d get some quirky, old-school looking images that I’d enjoy for a moment or two.
What could it be? I took out that small green canister from my pocket and loaded it into the FG. Thanks for the tip!
That was all I really needed to know. Have you tried Portra 400?

Because Fujicolor 200 is a daylight film stock with fine grain it’s a really versatile film stock that you can use in almost any situation. I couldn’t afford anything else. I shot it on my Nikon F5/50MM 1.8E. Superia employs what Fuji calls “Super-Fine Sigma” grain to improve the film’s grain structure. What is the differnece between Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia Premium 400 and Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400? I just knew I’d never seen them in an image before, and they looked good. Superia did just that, and even on occasion I’d make a shot that would really knock my socks off. A password reset link will be sent to you by email.
My young, doe-eyed self was happy to capture anything remotely decent. Having a versatile film that’s also cheap is always fun because it helps you work around things like budget and # of photos. Now, I’ve heard of pushing/pulling film before, but often times I either forget to try it, or I just haven’t shot that certain film stock enough to know what it looks like at box speed just from looking at it. I wondered if I’d been shooting the wrong film, but remembered it didn’t much matter. Unfortunately, most ‘amateur’ films like this one are too contrasty for serious work with high-quality lenses. At the time, a six-pack of Superia cost around nine bucks at the local Costco, making it the cheapest film out there by far, and considering how judicious I was with my shutter, I could stretch that six-pack of Superia to two, maybe three months. A week later I picked up the prints from the local Costco and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Pretty washed out and feeble colours compared with my favourite emulsions. During our third quarter break, while the rest of the band ran off to stuff their faces with nachos and hot dogs, I pulled out my little Nikon FG and lingered to watch the drumline perform for the crowd. And Superia 100 is absolutely glorious film, and in my experience a different class to Superia 400.
My gaze drifted back out the window to the silhouettes of strip malls, foreclosed homes, and the occasional squad car slipping past. Some say it’s Ferrania, some say it’s Kodak, I’m not sure what emulsion exactly.
I’m sort of resisting for two reasons, 1. My fourteen-year-old self didn’t know. This combination of fine grain and high speed results in a film that, when fitted behind a quality lens, is capable of making photos that are tack-sharp and loaded with analog character.

A freshly burned CD that I needed to give to a friend?
I remembered that I needed to set that ISO thing on the camera to 400, and though I had know idea what the purpose of that dial was, I turned it anyway and then promptly forgot about it. My eyes went to the clock. Fujifilm Fujicolor C200. (Source: Fujicolor C200). In addition to this, many users have even said that it’s capabilities go beyond being versatile at 200 ISO.
Hey Dan! “6:15 AM” it read, along with a tiny illuminated date- November, 2008.
The batch of Lomo 400 I’ve just got says made in USA on the box (suggesting it’s Kodak), but according to the Dexter site (https://dexter.pcode.nl/) the barcode number suggests it’s Ferrania. Photographers listen too much to what others are doing instead of just trying different things. All these years later and I’ve shot countless rolls of film of every brand and price. Plenty of overexposure does wonders for this film, perhaps try shooting it at 320 or 200 and see what happens? I looked around the room for assurance. I marvelled at its simple, uncluttered design. Josh Solomon is a freelance writer and touring bassist living in Los Angeles.
I’d memorialized that moment on analog film, rather than simply running an iPhone photo through a filter app. And I actually don’t have much experience with Superia 1600, but I sure will now.
As comfort level increases and a photo geek becomes more experienced, it’s not uncommon to find shooters who talk of Superia in the same breath as some seriously revered professional films, such as Ektar and Portra. Underexposure, however, is less forgiving.
I really really want to like Superia 400, on paper it sounds such an ideal film, and shots like the one of the dog above are absolutely lovely. In bright (exactly noon) Florida sunlight it produced blues that amazed. Required fields are marked *. Oops, wrong link on the last one!
Photographers that use C200 a lot have said that for their preference, shooting C200 at box speed seemed dull and lacked color, but pushing the film speed to 400 or 800 helped create more contrast and deeper, more vivid colors.
For these reasons, a good rule may be to meter for the shadows of a shot and only over-expose by a single stop. Join our newsletter to get exclusive freebies and new content right to your inbox. Many thanks for your support.]. I was forgetting something, but just what, I couldn’t recall. Great read – think I’m going to have to revisit Superia after being a bit underwhelmed by it first time (no doubt user error). I’m just starting to get into film myself. The drumline scene popped with a glorious vibrancy that seemed brighter than memory.
When under-exposed the film tends to turn shadows and lowlights green. I plunged into the lukewarm air of Panorama City, California, a colorless and dreary neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles.
