It was a beautiful view in the riverfront and fortunately not very busy today. So many turns and no real sense to the route. The nine-mile Elizabeth River Trail, which runs from Norfolk State University following the Elizabeth River northward to Terminal Boulevard, began with an abandoned railroad spur being transformed into a walking and bicycle trail. It was peaceful and the perfect way to spend a day away from the city life! This is a gorgeous walking, running, and biking trail that goes through the heart of downtown Norfolk and along the Elizabeth River. I wasn’t a fan of navigating it with young children. I bike this trail just about every day and I usually get a decent 12-16 miles out of it. You can tell the tide was on its way out though. The Atlantic City Spur section of the trail neighbors the Midtown Tunnel and adjacent Plum Point Park. Some parts of this trail are really nice. Other parts, no so much. Road construction adds to the confusion. There are parts of the trail where you have to walk/bike in the road. I turned around after 5 miles and came back. If I was hiking, I would’ve stopped just because the cars passing by could’ve just drenched you if you were at the areas of flood. not properly marked. I've walked to end to end, as well as small segments from time to time. There are signs along the path. The area coffee shops and wineries seemed nice. Learn how to create your own. I didn’t really have issues staying on path but I reviewed the maps ahead of time. Making Downtown a better place is an exciting and ongoing venture. This trail has a nice mix of urban scenery as well as historic suburban home architecture to look at. Very little standing water considering the amount of rain we’ve gotten in the last few days. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. ERT came to my work and explained that they are adding signs, functional art and bike stations along the trail. Details. The only bad side is if you are not from the area navigating through the trail can be challenging. It's possible to start/end at either Harbor Park or Hermitage Museum and Gardens. Map. Path was in great shape. Hampton Blvd is terrible to ride on and full of trash. Seems like a nice area there are sidewalks nearby that you can walk down. Nice varied route but for first-time visitors, signage was awful; finding small sporadic signs painted utility-box grey/brown with pastel camo logo, posted high, low, left, right, before turn or at turns or not at all took all our collective effort...felt like a scavenger hunt! Enjoy things to do on water or land you won’t find anywhere else. it's not really shaded so I do not recommend coming here when it's too hot.
